They stand together in comfortable silence. There are steps between them still, but yet, they are as close as two men can be. Sirens wail in the night, but for a change, neither chases them. The older looks to the younger and hesitates one moment more before asking softly, "Would you work with another as well?"

His hero's gaze shifts to face him. His expression is, as always, masked, hidden from his long time friend, but there's something about the look in his eyes that he finds comforting tonight and on their worst nights. "That is a moot question," he begins to say but hushes when he hears footsteps approaching from within police headquarters.

The men turn as one to face the newcomer. Jim's teeth clutch his cigarette more tightly. Batman's cape rustles, and there's no wind to move it. "Give it to me straight, Montoya."

The younger officer smiles at the Commissioner. "You won by a landslide, sir," she says excitedly. She glances at his companion, then hastily disappears back down the staircase.

The tension eases from Jim's aging body. He lets out a breath of relief that tastes fresher than any air in Gotham, despite his own cigarette smoke. Then he looks back to his hero and has to smile, because for a change, the Batman is actually smiling. There's nothing eerie or otherwise frightening in his smile. It's a grin of a friend who's happy for him and happy for the city for which they work so hard together to protect.

"I told you it was a moot question," Batman reminds him gently and is gone, but tonight, Jim's heart swoops with him through the city.

The End
